Filming Philosophy

John has a reverence for mountains, oceans (and everything in between), and culture that is intertwined with the outdoor world. Acutely aware of the privilege of being able to experience these wild places, he looks to bring meaning to his work and characters he portrays. Immersing himself in research, conversations, and collaborating with others are the hallmarks of projects that excite and motivate his creativity. Whether that be people, wildlife, geographic features or the environment itself John looks for stories. At the core of it all story is heart, and powerful narratives give impactful transformations for those along these journeys, and those who watch through his lens. Quite often the adventure is only the conduit to which an issue or story can be brought forward.  Environmental stewardships, mountain culture, athletic endurance, and social justice are a few of his intended genres.

Inspiration

John's original love of outdoor films came from when he was young and his mother would take him to documentary film screenings in an adventure store in Kitchener, Ontario. In Jr high and high-school John studied music intently and performed in choir, played the electric and stand up bass, and guitar. In those same years John developed a love of writing, finding his inner voice. He was thrilled at the experience of performing in front of others whether it be playing bass, guitar or reciting his poetry.

These early foundations would contribute later to his style choices as a director and cinematographer. Music and emotion being a large driver to reflect the rise of fall of the story. It always remains his guiding light as he takes on any project.

A film that captivated John was Touching the Void. Never before had he seen such a harrowing and immersive film that brought you into the world of Alpinism and the human condition of when things go wrong.

Years later, as an avid outdoorsman and creator, John strives to tell meaningful stories in wild places that maintain integrity and heart.
